Ground Cherry Relish

Tart-sweet and full of character, this Ground Cherry Relish makes a delicious twist on the traditional cranberry relish served at Thanksgiving. Ground cherries, also known as husk cherries or cape gooseberries, have a golden hue and a naturally sweet, slightly tropical flavor that pairs beautifully with roasted meats. In Northern California, these little fruits are harvested from late summer into early fall—just in time for holiday cooking—making them a wonderful local, seasonal substitute when cranberries aren’t as readily available. Not only is this relish a festive side for your Thanksgiving table, it also shines the next day spread onto a cold turkey sandwich, where its bright flavor balances the richness of the meat. With its jewel-like color and versatile flavor, this relish is bound to become a new favorite tradition.
