Few drinks capture the cozy spirit of winter like a pot of mulled wine simmering on the stove. This version, inspired by traditional Scandinavian glogg, gently infuses red wine with warming spices, sweet raisins, and fragrant cardamom. Almonds add a classic Nordic touch, making the drink both comforting and celebratory. Perfect for holiday gatherings, it fills the house with festive aromas and creates a welcoming start to any cold-weather party. Serve it in mugs by the fire, and let its warmth set the tone for a joyful evening.
INGREDIENTS:
1 bottle of medium or full-bodied red wine, such as Merlot
1/2 cup mulling spice blend
1/4 cup sugar
6 crushed cardamom pods (or 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom)
1/4 cup raisins
1/4 cup blanched almonds
METHOD:
In a large pot, combine the wine, mulling spices, sugar, raisins, and cardamom pods. Cover and bring just to a simmer.
Uncover, reduce to low heat, and let the mixture simmer gently for at least 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until infused with flavor.
Strain the wine through a fine-mesh strainer into a heatproof pitcher or directly into mugs.
Serve warm, garnished with the raisins and almonds if desired.
YIELD: Makes 4 servings.
