Homemade flour tortillas

Homemade Flour Tortillas

There is nothing quite like a warm, freshly made tortilla straight off the skillet. Soft, tender, and lightly blistered, homemade flour tortillas elevate even the simplest meal. Unlike the packaged versions, these tortillas have a rich, buttery flavor and a delicate chew that makes them irresistible on their own or wrapped around your favorite fillings. The best part? You don’t need special equipment or bread-making skills—just a few pantry staples and a little time. Once you try these, you’ll never want to go back to store-bought.

INGREDIENTS:

4 cups all-purpose flour
1 3/4 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
8 tablespoons butter (1 stick), softened*
1 1/3 cups very warm water

*Other fats like shortening, lard, or coconut oil may be used, but butter adds the best flavor.

METHOD:

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder.

Add the softened butter, then pour in the very warm water. Mix on medium speed until the dough forms a ball. Knead with the mixer for 5 minutes.

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead briefly by hand until smooth. Place in a bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let rest 20–30 minutes.

Heat a cast-iron or heavy skillet over medium-high until very hot.

Divide dough into 20 equal pieces. Roll each into a ball, then flatten and roll out into 8-inch circles on a lightly floured surface.

Cook each tortilla for about 30 seconds per side, until bubbles appear and golden spots form.

Keep tortillas warm by stacking them on a plate covered with a towel.

Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

YIELD: 20 tortillas
