Cool, creamy, and flecked with rich chocolate, this Homemade Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream is a refreshing treat for any season. The bright flavor of peppermint perfectly complements the velvety vanilla custard base, while chopped chocolate adds a satisfying crunch. Whether tinted pale green for nostalgia or left naturally ivory, it’s a scoop of pure, old-fashioned delight — perfect for summer gatherings or a midwinter reminder of warmer days.
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups whole milk
2 cups heavy cream
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon peppermint extract
3-4 drops green food coloring (optional)
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips, chopped
METHOD:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the milk, cream, sugar, salt, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract until the sugar is fully dissolved. If you’d like the classic minty hue, stir in a few drops of green food coloring.
Pour the mixture into your ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s directions.
About 10 minutes into churning, add the chopped chocolate chips. Continue churning until the mixture is thick and creamy, usually 25–30 minutes total.
Transfer the ice cream to a freezer-safe container. Cover tightly and freeze for 2–3 hours, or until firm enough to scoop.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS:
-
Serve in waffle cones or with warm chocolate brownies.
-
Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint or a drizzle of chocolate sauce.
