California, long celebrated for its rich agricultural diversity, is quietly becoming a notable player in the peanut industry. While the state is better known for crops like almonds and pistachios, peanuts have found a thriving niche—especially in the Central Valley, where warm days, cool nights, and well-drained soils create ideal growing conditions. Among the varieties...

Quince is a fruit with stories to tell. Long before apples became the familiar symbol of temptation, quince was believed to be the real “forbidden fruit” of the Garden of Eden. In Greek mythology, it was linked to Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and many believe the “golden apple” Paris gave her was actually a...

Basket full of tart crabapples
Crabapples remind me of the “Lemon Tree” folk song by Peter, Paul, and Mary. For those too young to remember, the lyrics went — “Lemon tree, very pretty, and the lemon flower is sweet But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat.”   The same could be said for crabapples. Sometimes called...

One of the most eye-catching vegetables at the Monterey Farmers Market has to be these beautiful French breakfast radishes from Blue Heron Farms.

With their vibrant crimson tops and snowy white tips, they’re as pretty as they are delicious. Unlike the sharp bite many people associate with radishes, French breakfast radishes are prized for their crisp texture, mild peppery flavor, and subtle sweetness. They’re wonderfully tender and are often enjoyed raw.

Slice them into salads, add them to sandwiches, or simply serve them the classic French way—with good butter, a sprinkle of flaky sea salt, and a crusty baguette. They also make a colorful addition to vegetable platters and charcuterie boards.

If you’ve never tried them before, this is the perfect time. Stop by Blue Heron Farms and discover why these elegant little radishes have become a market favorite!

The Monterey Farmers Market is open until noon. We hope to see you!

Good morning from the Monterey Farmers Market! Our first stop today? Minazzoli Farms!

If you haven’t discovered Flavortop nectarines yet, now is the time. These beauties are everything we love about summer—deep golden flesh, an incredibly juicy bite, and that perfect balance of sweetness with just a hint of tang.

Fun fact: Nectarines and peaches are virtually identical genetically. The only real difference is a naturally occurring gene that gives peaches their fuzzy skin while nectarines stay smooth. That’s it!

Flavortops are delicious eaten out of hand while the juice runs down your arm, but they’re also wonderful in the kitchen. Slice them into a crisp green salad with goat cheese, layer them over yogurt or vanilla ice cream, grill them for dessert, or bake them into cobblers, galettes, pies, crisps, and upside-down cakes. They also make spectacular jams, chutneys, and fruit preserves—if you can resist eating them all first!

Peak stone fruit season doesn’t last long, so be sure to stop by Minazzoli Farms and bring home a basket (or two). This is one of summer’s sweetest pleasures.

Have you spotted these little green gems at the market?

Fresh tomatillos have arrived at Pacific Rare Plant Nursery and they’re the secret behind authentic salsa verde!

Despite looking like green tomatoes, tomatillos have their own unique personality. Tucked inside their papery husks, they have a bright, tangy, slightly citrusy flavor that becomes mellow and wonderfully savory when roasted or simmered. They’re delicious in green salsas, enchilada sauces, soups, braises, and even grilled alongside summer vegetables.

To prepare them, simply peel away the papery husk, rinse off the naturally sticky coating, and they’re ready to use. Roast them under the broiler or on the grill until lightly charred to bring out their natural sweetness before blending into your favorite salsa.

Need inspiration? Visit Edible Paradise (link in bio) for delicious salsa recipes and bring a fresh taste of summer to your table!

The Monterey Farmers Market is open until noon. Come stock up for the weekend festivities!

Have you ever cooked with green eggplant?

One of our favorite things about visiting KT Farms is discovering something new every week. Alongside their beautiful purple eggplants, you’ll often find the less common green eggplant—a favorite in many Asian cuisines.

Green eggplants have a milder, slightly sweeter flavor than their purple cousins, with a creamy texture and very little bitterness. They’re delicious grilled, roasted, stir-fried, added to curries, or simply sautéed with garlic and a splash of soy sauce. Their tender flesh also makes them wonderful in dishes where you want the eggplant to become silky and rich.

Whether you’re recreating a favorite family recipe or looking to try something different, KT Farms’ colorful display is full of inspiration.

Stop by and see what catches your eye—you might just discover your new favorite vegetable! 🌱🍆

This morning you’ll find beautiful fresh cranberry beans (in the foreground, with Romano beans behind them) at Borba Family Farms’ booth.

Fresh cranberry beans are a seasonal treat. Unlike green beans, they’re grown for the plump beans inside the pods, so you’ll want to shell them before cooking. The beans have a creamy texture and a mild, nutty flavor that’s delicious in soups, stews, pasta dishes, grain bowls, or simply simmered until tender with olive oil, garlic, and fresh herbs. (The pretty cranberry-colored speckles fade as they cook!)

Romano beans, with their broad, flat pods, are wonderful steamed, sautéed, grilled, or slowly braised. Visit Edible Paradise (link in bio) for cooking instructions and recipes!

If you’ve never tried fresh shelling beans, this is the perfect opportunity to bring home something a little different from the market!
